Back again for round 2! Skrillex picks up the pace and brings more of the bass, but this time round he’s got a few more friends to help him out and the sound is amplified to the max!
On the second EP the theme of Scary monsters and nice spirits is played out through the tracks with Monstrous, violent samples heavier baselines than before and then the supreme contrast with the slightly pop dance anthems added into the mix. “Rock N’ Roll” kicks us off with a more usual electro dance route samples, synths, drum beats and all with the added element of Baltimore clap. Something changes halfway through the track as you can feel the dubstep inspired base drop and the realization becomes clear that this is going to be a bit more different than the first EP. The Dubstep and the “Scary monsters” element comes back into play when “Bare noise” and “foreign beggars” get involved on the track “Scatta”; a Violent Heavy base filled mashup of monstrous proportions using angry samples and thumping drum and synth beats. The spitting on each verse goes hand in hand with the pounding beat before each base drop to break up the heaviness and keeps the track flowing.
This is a by far the most welcomed progression in the Skrillex sound, as he’s maintained his identity with this track yet still managing to break out into the new Dubstep genre, making it his own. The nice spirits theme is explored in the track “with your friends (long drive)” and “all I ask of you” the former leading with a beautiful piano melody which carries a nostalgic dance theme along with ease. Skrillex is Back and this time he has grown more into himself on this EP bringing a larger than life sound that is so addictive and a showing his versatility and diversity whilst still sticking to what he is good at. The best is yet to come and I for one am eagerly looking forward to an album, because to be completely honest, he is the future.
