Guest Review: Catalina Ribas Pearce - Marina and the Diamonds Indie Film

This creative (if a little obsessive) video inspired by a compilation of Marina and the Diamonds songs was made by a particularly artistic fan hoping to bring international fame to the singer.

Being Marina and the Diamond’s number one fan, I’d like to think that she will reach international fame due to the richness and depth of her voice, her insightful lyrics and her catchy tunes, not a group of women dancing in leotards (an element of the video I was slightly confused about). Nevertheless, I really like this video. It appeals to my love of costumes, make-up and fairytales and has been timed beautifully with some of Marina’s most popular songs (I also give extra kudos for not seeing a glimpse of “Hollywood” anywhere).

From an artistic point of view I especially love the opening Alice in Wonderland scenes and the freeze-frame effects of the characters at the Mad-hatter’s tea party. The outfits and character make-up are stunning, and separate this video from an amateur attempt of simply dressing a bunch of girls up in tutus and making them dance around against a blank backdrop (again... why?)  The storyline takes well-known fairy-tales and puts a feminist “screw you Prince Charming” twist to them, which I feel is tongue-in-cheek enough to not seem cheesy or cliché.

There has obviously been a lot of effort put into this video but with 61,504 views and, apparently, the lady herself mentioning it on her YouTube channel, it has definitely paid off.

Catalina has recently started a Visual Arts blog, with over 1000 views per week. Updated daily with a huge range of street art, her own ideas and reviews of other artists, I highly recommend checking it out.
